I never imagined that I will be able to feed my chocolate-munching, meat-loving monster of a husband healthy meals every single day. It started off as soon as I was officially bestowed with the right to run our household (i.e. as soon as I signed my name next to his on the marriage contract). This right also had the provision that I now can dictate what gets cooked in our kitchen.
I have always been a sucker for healthy eating (but occasionally give in to junk food binges- from the “exotic” food stuff in UP Diliman’s roadside kiosks to the classic Chippy and Coke). Thanks to the Salcedo Market in Makati, I now have a place to buy all the little condiments, herbs, organic stuff that goes into our healthy meals. It is in this market that I was re-introduced to the Organic Brown Rice (we used to have it when I was still a kid growing up in Baguio and my mom called it Mountain Rice). When my husband saw the bag of brown rice, he was unsure if I was serious about buying it. Reading his mind, he was probably thinking that I will start serving him brown mush that screamed nutritious = not yummy. Seeing how hesistant he was, I opted for a smaller bag of rice. I struck a compromise with him- let us try it first and if you like it we will have it everyday. Guess what he liked the organic brown rice and has been telling friends about it. Moral of the story for the husband: nutritious does not always mean not yummy. Moral of the story for the wife: Do not take drastic steps to transform the food preferences of someone who thinks Reese’s chocolate is a staple for a balanced diet. Instead, introduce yummy but healthy food items one meal at a time!
